cactus bra SPACE, in the Blue Star Art Complex, presents “Directions Not Included” by Ty Wilcox. Wilcox’s installation is a copious display of signs that reflects the dialogue of his past, present and future as a way to communicate an ironic frankness and reveal hidden truths through the language of signage. The works will be on view September 30- October 30, 2010 by appointment only or you can join us at the opening receptions Thursday, September 30, 6-8 p.m. and Friday, October 1, 6-9 p.m.

Wilcox views his installation as a way to communicate both the seemingly obvious and yet completely absurd and even incomplete aphorisms that are generated from his own personal experiences, which vary from childhood recollections to insignificant memories to random reflections of daily events. When referring to his installation, Wilcox states, “These phrases combine together to reflect my personal sense of self along with a general philosophy of humanity. The viewer would experience the work on multiple levels: as a personal dialogue with the artist, as the presence of mass communication, and as a space where word manipulation transforms into cultural parody.” This type of installation presents the possibility of forming connections between different signs that may be read collectively so as to provoke an ideology of language that embraces the intrusiveness of sentimentality.
