Jason Urban’s cactus bra SPACE exhibition, Hard-Edged Sea, features a new sculptural printwork that underscores the ambiguous relationship between three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional images. Using digital output, Urban creates piles and stacks that reveal pictures
. In Hard-Edged Sea, Urban applies a rigid, triangle mesh structure to images of the Galveston coast. The result is a three-dimensional rendering of sorts- a man-made shell that attempts to stylize nature. Urban is interested in traditional, even cliché, motifs such as sunsets and mountaintops as iconic representations of the universal or infinite. Influences range from camouflage and op-art to minimalist sculpture and games of skill like Jenga, Tetris, and pick-up sticks.

Jason Urban is an artist/writer/designer/curator/teacher living and working in Austin, TX. Originally from Northeastern Pennsylvania, Urban earned his BFA from Kutztown University in Kutztown, PA and then his MA and MFA from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. His prints, drawings, paintings and installations have been featured in numerous venues both nationally and internationally. More info available at http://jasonurban.com
