Justin Boyd will be exhibiting some of his work from the Arthouse
Texas Prize finalist show for the first time in San Antonio at
cactus bra SPACE. Justin Boyd is a San-Antonio based artist who
utilizes a vast range of media—from video, sound, and performance to
sculpture, installation and two-dimensional work—to create
environments and objects that tell non-linear yet evocative stories
about American history and layered cultural experiences.
For the exhibition at Arthouse, Boyd created an interwoven,
multi-sensory installation based on the Mississippi River. The piece
he will be exhibiting at cactus bra is a tree that has snapped and
fallen over to create an arch, from that break new growth begins and
is nourished with audio tape that contains sounds sourced from a
coal plant. Something old dies, like a tree, or the branch in this
piece, and through biological processes that death becomes life for
other things. Old forests become beds of coal over millennia, a
broken growth joint is where new growth begins. Boyd has taken these
forms and sounds and put them together into a single form that can
talk about that cycle or that flux.
