San Antonio artist, Rhonda
Kuhlman, uses symbols of nature – birds and bunnies, flowers and
hearts, and intersperses them within the repetitious patterns of
Victorian wallpaper to create a delicate balance between what is
presented and what is not. At first glance, her drawings seem
decorative, however on closer examination one finds that the nuances
of technique or artistic prowess create a balance and assist her in
the creation of a mysteriously tranquil setting – without depth of
field or foreshadowing. Her symbols or "playmates," as she
likes to call them, weave in and out of the intricate patterns in an
attempt to negotiate space, time, perhaps existence itself. A bird
can fly away at any second; dandelions only last in the stillness.
Then, poof, one suddenly wonders if it’s all been but a dream.
As the month continues
Rhonda will slowly add sculptural elements to create a physical and
conceptual dialogue between all the pieces.
For the closing reception, July 28th, the
artist will unveil the exhibition in its entirety complete with an
installed, mirrored, magic beanstalk in the center of the room. Stop
by just for fun and to see what’s up. The gallery will becomes
less of a gallery space and more of a reflection on itself, and
those who enter the space. Saturday, July 28th, you won’t
be looking at the drawings anymore – it will be the mirrored
illusion of the drawings reflected upon you. What will you see then?
